Thanks guys! Some of you might remember me from awhile back asking about using CVs on a jag diff and i had Joe help me with the geometry on the suspension which i am using now.

I havent dont too much designing on the control arms themselves yet. I do know the shock will be passing thru the upper control arm and attack to the lower. This suspension will also be on airbags.
Next step is to get the diff mounted so the control arms are a ways out still. Then ill make the spindles and finally the control arms.

Howdy fellas! Well i was on here awhile back when i was designing and figuring this out and ive got something to show. Im using a jag diff with all custom upper and lower control arms, CV axles hooked to custom spindles. This is going under a 92 chevy truck.

Well i was gonna wait a bit longer but ill go ahead and update this. Shes coming together finally

Im putting a jag diff under a bagged 92 chevy with custom control arms and spindles. Designed it to get a min amount of camber to help with traction in cornering. I forgot the exact amount id have to look but i think it was like 2 degrees. Control arms arent equal length or parallel however.

Hey man!

Track width will be around 60"
I used AWD Chevy Astro van hubs and axles straight out of the box which has a 5x5 bolt pattern.
Bolted everything together with some adapters i designed and had machined.

I thought about using the factory spindles also for simplicity but i want something cleaner so ill be building spindles with uniballs for balljoints. Should travel the 11" i need with no binding!

That is really nice, I envy you with all that room you have to play with. I also was wondering if you made the rails yourself. The best I could see, there are no welds shown anywhere.

Yea they are Mandrel bent!

Well i have been doing stuff with this project, just havent done anything physical. I designed and had these rails made have all the IRS geometry done thanks to ALOT of help from joe! Just need to make the parts now. This is the first part of the puzzle! I have some more stuff going on also, stay tuned!

well i cant get the camber to act decent with the arms not parallel. I think there is just too much travel in this suspension compared to a non adjustable setup.

So im gonna check a few things from this against the bed and whatnot and if it looks good i can FINALLY get to the fun stuff!!

Im gonna try something with that upper control arm. Ive always read and been told that you never put the control arms parallel like that and im going to try and lower the UCA inner mount and make some spindle changes.

What i saw so far with messing with that was the camber went all over the place, i guess its the difference with a suspension that gets 11" of usable travel vs a non adjustable vehicle. Seems like if i set it up the "right" way that its got nasty camber laid out which i cant stand.

So everything works smoothly huh? That's good news! The track should shorten up quite a bit too, starts @ 73", what's it at at full compression?

That camber actually doesnt look bad and im gonna need some to clear the bed on this truck. I sent you some more measurements and updated info joe! I sent it to the email listed on your profile as i cant remember which one you gave me before.

Oh and i was looking at the control arms being 12" apart at the uprights. Need room for the axles and air bags, dunno what number you are running there right now.

Ive got all the measurements, the ones i dont have a solid figure on is the exact location of the CV joints themselves. very hard to measure that and ive looked at them before.

Whats your email and ill send you all the info i have, i can try and measure the CVs again this weekend.

Thanks again joe

I'll get you some measurements I have at the house later

Slammy, I love what you are doing with the CV's ... I did some simulations for Daze a while back using a CAD package called Solidworks. I used the stock lengths from a 69 XJ6 and calculated the camber gain through 10 degrees of travel up and 10 degrees down, then did a second calculation using Daze's length on his unit. The numbers were interesting. Starting with the half shaft at zero and camber at zero ... at 10 degrees up the camber goes to -1.83 and travels 2.54 inches. At 10 degrees down the camber goes to +0.79 and travels 3.15 inches. This is a total of 5.5 inches of travel which is half of what you are trying to get ... the camber gain at 11 inches is going to be interesting to say the least.

You did this using the jag design with the lower control arm only? It is my understanding that an upper/lower control arm setup has MUCH better camber control, its just a matter of getting the lengths just right and the mounting points exact. Thoughts?

You already have the Astro hub on that axle, what you need is an upright. Same 3 bolt pattern as the hub look at T-Bird setup or make a triangular one like Rorty Locost setup. Couldn't  post a pic but here is the link showing the upright, his is 4 bolt pattern but you get the idea.  http://locost7.info/files/suspension/RortyLocostIRSAssembly.pdf

Yea im gonna build uprights simliar to that. The one problem im having is the control arm geometry and the dynamics of whats best for a street driven vehicles. Ive read 1.5 degrees of camber gain but i also need 11" of suspension travel. Im gonna have to really sit down and look at this.

You must be talking about the new camaros with the IRS? That would be a better choice than a jag IRS id say. The only reason i used a jag was cause the inboard brakes but there are plenty of other IRS to use.

As for changing the hubs, the biggest problem i see is with the spines. Thats why i am using hubs and axles off the same vehicle.

basically it sounds like you want to do the exact same thing i am but you need a 5x 4 3/4 bolt pattern.

Id use a 2003 S10 blazer 4x4 hub and cv axles. The axles are different sizes so id order two of the same depending on what track width you want. Hopefully the assembly is too narrow and you can make adapters like i have but make them thicker to get the track width right.

Then you can build spindles and control and all that jazz.

You could also just get a complete IRS and redrill the hubs or use adapters, that would save a TON of work

HI Slammy,

Looking at the adaptor that you made, do you think a similar adaptor could be made for the hubcarrier end?

What are you wanting to do? I dont see an easy way to do it, no but anything is possible.

Slammy, that is looking fantastic!!!  I cant weight to see it as you fab up some of the other parts for it.  What are your plans for the rest of it??  LCAs, trailing arms, shock mounts??

Yea i can finally start looking at spindles and control arms. Ill design the frame according to where i need the control arm mounts.
