62 Galaxie and IRS or 4 link

Hi all
I kinda got myself stuck with a rear axle for my 62 wagon. the one I was going to use is 4" wider
then the stock unit, and its a 4 link setup
I am lookng at late mustangs either 4 link or IRS.  My research says they are about 59.5"  track..
The wagon was 60". I am thinking that either would fit.
I have never really seen in person, (in pictures yes) the IRS of the Mustang, is it a complete unit.
can anyone point to a site with specs on it...
Being in the LA basin there are tons of wreaking yards and most have half off sales each month
so prices are cheap.

OCT 8
Just back from the wreaking yard.
took some measurements of  a 97 Mustand and a Mark VIII
I don't beleave either would work on a 62 without a lot of mods to the cars frame
The Marks upper carrier is 22" deep ( front to back)  width should be ok but would never get
it high enough..
The mustang solid axle would be a better choice but then a lot of work still needs to be done.
Of course the best way would be to take them home and check it out..but that is $$$$ up front.
So I decided to go this weekend and remove the lower control arms from the Mustang.
then modify the mounting bracket on my original axle to place the control arm inside the frame...
I'll use 3\8 angle to make an upper support across the frame... for the uca and the spring mount. also
to intall the shock mounts... fianlly one of my buddies will be free and can come over and help..
Damn these working guys...
So I hope by at least the end of this month I'll have a driving car...
thanks for all the help
Best

Re: 62 Galaxie and IRS or 4 link

Welcome aboard!  What is your intended use?  If you're going to do hard core drag racing, go with the four link.  Most any other usage, I'd go with an IRS.

Re: 62 Galaxie and IRS or 4 link

Hi 303Radar
Been hanging around for a bit, I'm also on the Galexie forum and a few other.
You know when you do any Mod, each one is different, thats what got me into trouble
with my 79 Lincoln rear end.
the wagon is just a street ride, but I wanted to keep the 4 wheel disc, which I had on
my 77 Ranchero..
The IRS would mean I only had to figure out the mounting location.
the live axle would mean I'd still need to install an upper locater for the coil spring.
From what the wreaking yard people tell me, they sell the whole unit at one price..
the one girl gave me a price of $100   on the half off days...
The IRS is right at 60"  track which is the same as the Wagon is...
Thanks for any assistance
Best
Dave

Re: 62 Galaxie and IRS or 4 link

Is your Galaxie a body on frame?  I would think so.  If some, most of what you'll need is a good cross member.  I bought a universal cross member kit for $300 from Snow White LTD.  I think it'll be a good investment since the shock mounts are adjustable and pre-fabbed, the center mount is already set for a 3 degree angle.  Worst cost might be new drive shaft, (not a given, just a thought) and four coil overs.  The coil overs may run you a grand for good quality, especially if you need them with a ride height of 15.5 inches.  I had good luck contacting QA1 directly for information and found a better price on their products through Summit Racing.
Your other concern will be the bolt pattern.  I don't remember which year Ford bought Jag, but until that time, the bolt pattern is Chevy - 5 0n 4.75.  After Ford bought Jag, I believe the pattern changed to Ford, dimensions unknown by me.
However, Daze does sell a template which will let you re-drill the hub for a Ford size/pattern.  Once you re-drill, grind flat the existing studs.  If for some reason you keep the existing studs, the studs are 1/2 inch diameter rather than 7/16th.
Another concern will be gear ratio and speedometer setup.  Jag uses a Dana 44, so you have a wide variety of gear options.  But remember there is a size difference in the carrier around 3.92'ish.  If you want a different gear ratio, be prepared to spend $300 (best price at a specialist shop) for the work plus the cost of gears and rebuild kit.

If you can get the Jag IRS for $100, it might be the easiest of the two installs.  Just be prepared for a the costs I mentioned above.

Good luck!

Re: 62 Galaxie and IRS or 4 link

If you have a chance, post a picture of the connection from your driveshaft to your current axle.  There is a chance you won't need a new driveshaft for the connection.  I forgot the stock Jag rear has a similar mounting flange as a Ford.
Another way to cut short term costs would be to re-use the existing shocks if they are long enough.  They may not do well with the weight of the wagon, but they might work for the short term.

Re: 62 Galaxie and IRS or 4 link

Mine is the old style  (yoke) the newer style uses a plate...
I'm working on my  74 Dodge today, need to install new seals on the pitman shaft
then I'll go over to the junk yard and look at what available, half off weekend at one
in 2 weeks its the other junk yard....
  Lots a cheap prices...
17" steel wheels   Ford bolt pattern  $8   with the tires on them, I've bought some with
new tires on them..

Re: 62 Galaxie and IRS or 4 link

So its half off at the local ecology wreaking yard, I went down to take a look and see
if there were any Mark 8 or mustangs of the correct years to fit there rear axle into my 62.
The frame rails on my 62 are 41.75? insdie
The mounting bolts on the mark are spaced at 53"
I noted that there are 3 mounting bolts on each of the front supports that includes the rubber bushing.
on the back I only saw one mounting point, but I could not take a messurement because of the
tire rims used to hold the car up.
To anyone elses knowledge are there any other mounting points, something not easly seen?
not counting the shocks... I guess we would remove the air bags and opt for a coil spring..
Its seems like a lot of work just to get the assembly out, not to mention installing it...
