Narrowing an Tbird 8.8 Ford setup?

Hey Guys just signed up.
Have a 1964 Mercury Comet with the TBird SuperCoupe 3.8 SC engine and trans installed.
The car is tubbed with a narrowed 9 inch rear.
I want to build an 8.8 independant suspension system to complete the transformation.
Are there any threads dealing with this combo (or similiar,,Mustang Falconetc) that I could work into?

Re: Narrowing an Tbird 8.8 Ford setup?

fredsmailes, looking good! I'm sure it sounds even better than what's heard on this computer, welcome. The biggest problem $$$ narrowing an IRS with CV's is the CV's. Try and find a factory length that suits your need. If you look deep enough there are some modern Ford threads here. Try the search maybe, I think there's one.

Man you've got some great roads there!

Re: Narrowing an Tbird 8.8 Ford setup?

Thanks for the info and links this will keep me occupied for a while!!
The roads,,,yes WOW, one of the reasons I retired here from the flat land.
The road in the vid is 3A along the Kootenay Lake in southern BC Canada.
Classed as one of the 10 best  motorcycle rides in Canada by more than one pubicaltion.
The Factory 5 guys and the Corvette clubs are always coming through!!
Great pavement, views and above all very little traffic except July and August.
And the best part I live 3 blocks from it!!!

One company which will may custom length CV joints is Mark Williams.  I don't know what the cost is, but I expect they could give a quote over the phone.  The web site is:

Good luck with your build!

Re: Narrowing an Tbird 8.8 Ford setup?

Hey Guys!
Been trying to find info on how narrow I can get my 8.8 TBird rear
and still have some travel left.
I want to put it under my 64 Comet. I presently have a narrowed 9 inch
that is 51 inches wheel mount face to face.
To get there I need to cut almost all the half shaft off between the cv boots.
The Tbird irs is 16 inches wider than the 9 inch.
Any imput?

Fred
