Shout out!!!

We have gotten about 10 new members in the last couple of months and I thought it would be a good idea for all members, old and new to introduce them selves, say where you are from, and what you are working on.

Re: Shout out!!!

Just slow is all. I was hoping to  maybe attach a photo or something and kept checking the site from the wrong laptop. Guess what I CAN do is post a couple links.

MG-Roadmaster:                        http://forum.britishv8.org/read.php?2,166,page=66
Upgrades to my car:                  http://forum.britishv8.org/read.php?2,274,page=17
My car before the upgrades:   http://www.britishv8.org/MG/JimBlackwood.htm

Anyway, JB here, have near identical modified Jag IRS in 2 different MGBs, mine which is a roadster (soft top) and the MG-Roadmaster MGB-GT (coupe) which is a group build. The coupe is finished except for shakedown and some minor issues, and sports a 455 Buick V8 and 5 speed. It will be going on tour next spring. My car has a 340 Buick V8, blown, injected and intercooled with distributorless ignition and full instrumentation. That is coupled to a Lexus 8 speed automatic (IS-F) and wears 315/35-17 rubber at the rear. Both cars have air suspension at the front. Both cars are expected to be around the 500/500 hp/torque level but will have quite different driving characteristics.

The IRS is a 1st generation  proprietary design bolt-in package, and plans are in the works for a Mark-II version with several significant improvements, primarily reduction of unsprung weight. But it may take a couple years to get rolling on that.

Re: Shout out!!!

Fair question. The factory used the Buick 215 (3.5L Rover) in the MGBGT-V8 which was only sold in the domestic market, so we never got it over here except for gray market cars. So the vast majority of conversions use that engine (BOPR) in some form or another. Mine was no different. The 340 is the limit of that engine line using the same headers, as the 350 Buick has a different port layout. Aluminum heads for the 300 and 340 are also available. The BOPR is 30 lbs lighter than the stock  1800cc engine, the 300 or 340 about 30 lbs heavier. With the 455 and aluminum aftermarket heads and intake we picked up about a hundred pounds. So weight was a factor. The big block layout is very much like the SBB, but where the SBB is a long stroke engine the BBB is a short stroke engine. (IIRC, only .050" difference in stroke length from 340/350 to 455 at 3.850 and 3.900".)  We decided that whereas the factory had used the smallest Buick V8, we would complete the circle by using the biggest. The whole project actually began as a joke but it certainly is no joke now, and a conservative estimate would place the value of the car well over $60K. In fact, the real story is how a widely dispersed group of enthusiasts came together to create this project. To my knowledge it is the first and only time a build has been done in this manner, entirely on the basis of volunteer labor and donated parts, etc. Even the paint, a $15K value was donated. The car will tour the country to generate interest in the synergistic relationship between little British cars and big American iron.

Re: Shout out!!!

Jim do you have those pent roof valve covers still? I see them only in your build stage, so Ford FE looking. Love that long blower drive. Daze those guys at British V8 love using that Buick motor. I love searching British V8. There's a guy that has a C3 carrier/ and his bearing carriers/hubs are 4 point mounted.

Here's the C3 IRS, Michael Zappa's TVR Tuscan, near the middle.

Re: Shout out!!!

Not sure what you are referring to on the valve covers Ralphy. On the 340 or the 455? We had a set of stock covers on the 455 but they were badly bent so we had to replace them. Maybe you're referring to the Olds 215?

We have members with a number of IRS variations. 5 Jag that I can think of off hand, one or two Hoyle which is Jag based, and at least one other design on the MGs. Then of course the Triumphs are already IRS but there are some custom Vette installs and a hybrid or two.

Re: Shout out!!!

I see them on your second link upgrades, you must have seen them on Ford motors. They're called pentroof, like these. The ford FE motor has some unique looks, the valve cover actually covers some of the intake manifold, the pentroof valve covers, and the coolest looking surge tank. Anyhow that motor pic looks nice!

Re: Shout out!!!

Thanks. Those are the stock Rover valve covers, they bolt right up to the SBB heads just like they were made for them, which actually they were. Cast aluminum, cheap on ebay, and available in several styles. There's even a somewhat rare version specifically for the MGB-V8. But those tend to cost money. Really dresses up the old 340 Buick.
